Previous Board Meeting Minutes Approval. Motion by Bill Mathis, seconded by James Harvey, to approve the minutes of April 14, 2022, May 10, 2022, and July 21, 2022, and the Special Meeting on September 22, 2022. Passed.

The meeting was called to order by Ruben Alejandro, President

Reports:

  1. Reviewed membership totals and recruitment strategies.
  2. Reviewed billing strategies and alternatives to the current monthly billing cycle.
  3. Reviewed the podcast viewership, planned podcasts, and process (e.g., social media) to increase viewers.
  4. Studied the website design and strategy for more “user-friendliness.”
  5. Reviewed involvement in partnership in Amicus briefs with Americans United and NSBA.
  6. Reviewed readership and contents of the HML Post.
  7. Reviewed progress on the transition phase of the Executive Director.

  2. Proposed by-law revisions.
  3. The financial health of the League

Action Items

  1. Nomination for Reappointments to the Board. Motion by James Harvey, seconded by Ruben Alejandro, to approve the nomination of reappointment of David Berliner and Kevin Riley to a three-year term as Directors, starting in 2023. Passed
  2. Nomination for Vice President. Motion by Bill Mathis, seconded by Ruben Alejandro, to approve the nomination of David Berliner as Vice President in 2023. Passed
  3. Awardees for 2023:  
    1. Motion by Bill Mathis, seconded by James Harvey, to have the 2023 “Outstanding Friend of Public Education Award” be presented to Patricia Gándara & Gary Orfield – codirectors of UCLA Civil Rights Project. Passed
    1. Motion by James Harvey, seconded by Bill Mathis, to present the 2023 “Outstanding Public Educator Award” to Dan Domenech, Executive Director of AASA. Passed
    1. Motion by David Berliner, seconded by Bill Mathis, to have the 2023 “Friend of the League Award” be presented to Kathleen Hurley, a long-time advocate and corporate fundraiser for the League. Passed
  1. Adjustment of Membership Dues. Motion by James Harvey, seconded by David Berliner, that the membership dues be adjusted in March 2023 to $175.00 for full members and $90.00 for retirees and graduate students. Passed.
  2. Adjustment in the Executive Director Transition. Motion by James Harvey, seconded by David Berliner, to complete the transition of the Executive Director from June 30, 2023, to February 28, 2023. Passed

  1. James Harvey will provide the names of 10 potential new members.
  2. James Harvey will contact Matt Krise about continuing the corporate partnership.
  3. Jeanne Collins will contact AASA about Dan Domenech being awarded the “Outstanding Public Educator” award.
  4. David Berliner will contact Patricia Gándara and Gary Orfield about being awarded the “Outstanding Friend of Public Education” award. (Maximum of $1,000.00 for travel and lodging expenses.)
  5. Jack McKay will contact Kathy Hurley about the “Friend of the League Award.”
  6. Jack McKay will contact Brent Clark President-Elect position.
  7. Ruben Alejandro and Jack McKay will schedule a Zoom meeting of the officers to discuss the future finances of the League.
  8. Jeanne Collins and Jack McKay will develop a timeline for the transition of billings, subscriptions, memberships, and bank accounts of the League.
