Hargreaves, Glass, Marx Honored by Horace Mann League (HML)

Andy Hargreaves has been named the 2016 Horace Mann League Outstanding Friend of Public Education.  Hargreaves is the Thomas Screen Shot 2015-11-08 at 6.35.14 PMMore Brennan Chair at the Lynch School of Education at Boston College.  Prior to joining BC, he was co-founder and co-director of the International Centre for Educational Change at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education.  Among his most recent books, in collaboration with fellow authors, is Uplifting Leadership, published by Jossey Bass.  An education leader on an international stage, Hargreaves holds degrees from the University of Leeds, Sheffield City College of Education, and the University of Sheffield, and an honorary degree from Uppsala University in Sweden.  In an article for Phi Delta Kappan, he declared that a digital age of complex skills, cultural diversity, and high-speed change calls for more challenging educational goals and more sophisticated and flexible change strategies.

Education Policy Center, he pays particular attention to educational psychology and the social sciences and is credited with coining the term, meta-analysis, in 1976.  Glass is Regents’ Professor Emeritus at Arizona State University and is a research professor in the School of Education at the University of Colorado Boulder.  He collaborated with David Berliner on his most recent book, 50 Myths and Lies That Threaten America’s Public Schools.  HML 2014 president

Gary Marx has been selected as the 2016 Outstanding Friend of the Horace Mann League.  A longtime education leader, his most recent Screen Shot 2015-02-05 at 11.25.12 AMbook, published by Education Week Press, is Twenty-One Trends for the 21st Century.  He is completing ten years of service on the HML Board and as an officer.  All are scheduled to be honored during the Horace Mann League’s Annual Meeting and Luncheon, 11:45 to 1:30 p.m., Friday, February 12, 2016, at the Sheraton Grand Downtown Hotel in Phoenix.

The Horace Mann League’s nearly 600 members include distinguished educators and thought leaders who are devoted to the principles of a sound public education for all students. 

During the Phoenix meeting, HML will install new officers.  Christine Johns-Haines, superintendent of the Utica Community Schools in Michigan will become 2016 president.  Martha Bruckner, superintendent in Council Bluffs, Iowa, will become president-elect.  Eric King of Illinois will become vice president, and Charles Fowler of New Hampshire will become immediate past president.  Ember Conley of Utah and Ruben Alejandro of Texas will be installed as new members of the League’s Board of Directors.

HML Ambassador Awards, based on membership recruitment, were scheduled for presentation to:  Laurie Barron (MT), Brent Clark (IL), Mark Edwards (NC), James Harvey (WA), Evelyn Holman (NY), Eric King (IL), Gary Marx (VA), and Charles Fowler (NH).
