Dr. Carl Hermanns is a Clinical Professor in the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University.  He currently designs and teaches courses in leadership, organizational change, the history of the American education system, and critical issues in education for the MEd in Educational Leadership program. He also serves as the ASU Faculty in Residence with the Roosevelt School District.

Prior to joining ASU, Carl served as a teacher, principal, and assistant superintendent in California and Oregon public schools.  He received his Ed.D. in Administration, Planning, and Social Policy (Urban Superintendents Program) from Harvard University.  Dr. Hermanns’ research interests include K-12 district and school leadership, language development for English language learners, democracy and education, and issues pertaining to equitable educational opportunity and student wellness and success.

Dr. Hermanns also spent a number of years as a professional musician.  He has an undergraduate degree in music education from Temple University, a master’s degree in symphonic and opera conducting from Carnegie-Mellon University, and prior to returning to education in 1997, spent 15 years as a conductor in the symphonic, commercial, and Broadway arenas.
