Dr. Martin Brooks
Marty Brooks is executive director of the Tri-State Consortium, an alliance of 50 school districts in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Previously, he was superintendent on Long Island for 16 years, and also was a deputy superintendent and elementary school principal on Long Island. He began his educational career in the South Bronx as a teacher and guidance counselor.
Dr. Brooks earned his doctoral degree in educational administration at Teachers College, Columbia University. He has served on the boards of the Long Island Children’s Museum, Public Schools for Tomorrow, the Metropolitan School Study Council, the Institute for the Development of Education in the Advanced Sciences at Hofstra University, the Long Island School Leadership Center, and most recently the HML. He also is a member of the Suburban School Superintendents and the National Superintendents Roundtable. Dr. Brooks served as president of the Nassau County Council of School Superintendents in 2000-01.
Dr. Brooks has written extensively about education and leadership and is a co-author (with his wife, Jacqueline Grennon Brooks) of one of ASCD’s best-selling books, In Search of Understanding: The Case for Constructivist Classrooms. He has presented at numerous local, state, national and international conferences. He also has conducted superintendent searches and has facilitated Board of Education retreats. Dr. Brooks is in his first term on the HML Board of Directors.
