Louis N. Wool

Dr. Louis N. Wool, Ed. D. has served the Harrison School District as Superintendent for 23 years. He led the organization through transformational change that profoundly impacted the learning experiences for a generation of children. The reforms altered every facet of the district from curriculum and instruction, professional learning, teacher evaluation and organizational culture.

Prior to becoming superintendent, Dr. Wool was Assistant Superintendent for Instruction in Harrison, and introduced innovative programs to improve opportunities for students. He spent 18 years in the Mount Vernon City School District as a teacher, coach, and district administrator.

In 2024, Dr. Wool received two prestigious awards: the Columbia University Teachers College Distinguished Alumni Award and the Horace Mann Champion of Public Education.

The Columbia University Teachers College Distinguished Alumni Award recognized Dr. Wool for his extraordinary leadership in guiding our school district to sustained academic excellence and fostering a culture that honors and respects all students.

The Horace Mann League also recognized Dr. Wool as a Champion of Public Education for his transformational and influential work advancing exemplary public education in the United States.

In 2012, Dr. Wool received the Distinguished Service Award from the Lower Hudson Council of School Superintendents (LHCSS). In 2010, Dr. Wool was named New York State Superintendent of the Year. As a doctoral student at Teachers College, Columbia University, he received the Carroll F. Johnson Scholarship for outstanding leadership. He was the President of the LHCSS, and is President of the State-Wide Schools Cooperative Health Plan. He serves on the advisory boards of the Bank Street College Future School Leaders Academy and Tri-states Consortium.

Dr. Wool earned a doctorate in Organizational Leadership from Teachers College, Columbia University, bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Manhattanville College, and a masters degree in School Administration from Iona College.
